Update: NYPD beekeeper Darren Mays explained to Gothamist that his colleague, and the NYPD’s only other beekeeper, Officer Michael Lauriano of the 1st Precinct, responded to the swarm. He estimates that it was about 20,000-30,000 bees, which is an “typical”-sized swam. Swarms normally arise when the hive is “overcrowded,” he said, when “it really is sizzling and humid” like currently.
The bees were taken to a farm on Lengthy Island.
Enjoyable truth to the bee-uninformed: Mays, who performs in the 104th Precinct and acquired into beekeeping as a result of a buddy (“I believed it was comical), stated that swarms do have a queen bee that prospects the other bees to a new site, and there is a further queen bee remaining in the outdated hive.
